Maize & Wheat

Since farming has turned into a full scale business, and needed to be treated as such to keep one’s head above water in a shaky economy, we had to make sure that we make the most of what we had.   We started looking at different crops to utilize our natural resources to the max. The crops that would fit the profile, should be hardy and withstand a certain amount of drought.  Since these crops were going to be used for crop rotation for potatoes and onions, they must not require any herbicides or pesticides that would interfere with the cultivation of potatoes or onions that were to be planted in the same soil during the following season.  Maize and wheat were the natural options.  Not only did they produce a welcome additional income, but after harvesting these crops, we allow the cattle graze on the remains.  This helps to save our veld especially in dry seasons.
